2007 Dry Stack Bennett Valley Syrah
SOLD OUT!
Like many winemakers who are working with cool climate Syrah in California, I continue to be convinced that Syrah might be the ideal red grape for the Californian climate. In cool sites like Bennett Valley it produces deeply colored wines with tremendous fruit expression. No high alcohol jammy fruit bombs here. There’s some of that “old world meets new world” combination of flowers and dried herbs with ripe black fruits and meat that, to me, is exactly what I am looking for in Californian Syrah. You can tell that I like this vineyard, I guess. Much has been written about the 2007 vintage in California, almost all of it glowing. From my perspective, the vintage yielded wines of great concentration but without high alcohols. Many of my 2007 wines took a while to open up, and the Dry Stack Syrah is no exception. I held it a little longer than normal before releasing so that it would be “ready.” Compared to the well received 2006, the 2007 is bit purer, with more dark fruits and earth and a little less “meatiness.” Syrah can be almost Pinot-like in its perfume and sensuality, and the Dry Stack this year is a good example. As before, I am releasing it at the reasonable price of $30/bottle. Meant for enjoyment, not fetishism.
